1. Peter

8 questions · Religion & Belief

The Apostle Peter is regarded as the first pope and first Bishop of Rome: the beginning of a line that reaches to this day. Originally a simple fisherman named Simon, he was called by Jesus to be one of his closest disciples and given the name "Peter", meaning "rock". According to Christian tradition, Jesus said to him: "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church." On this rests the special claim of the papacy. After the death of Jesus, Peter acted as a leading figure of the young Christian community and finally reached Rome. Tradition holds that Peter died there as a martyr around the year 64 under Emperor Nero; he is said to have been crucified upside down. Over his presumed grave rises St. Peter's Basilica today. Good to know: Peter is regarded by the Catholic Church as the first pope: all popes trace their succession back to him. The fisherman Peter was one of the twelve apostles and Jesus's closest confidant. By tradition Peter was martyred by crucifixion in Rome: reputedly upside down, not deeming himself Jesus's equal.
