10. John Tyler

10 questions ยท Politics

John Tyler, born in Virginia in 1790, was the tenth President of the United States (1841 to 1845). He came to office in an unusual way: as Vice President he succeeded after the sudden death of William Henry Harrison: the first VP ever to do so. Decisive was how Tyler interpreted the role: he insisted on being a full president, not merely "acting". This precedent (that the vice president fully assumes the office in such a case) was later explicitly confirmed in the Constitution. Politically Tyler soon stood without support: his own Whig Party expelled him because he defied its line. His term saw the annexation of Texas. He died in 1862. Good to know: John Tyler was the first vice president to become president through the death of the incumbent: setting an important precedent. Tyler governed with almost no support: disowned by his own side, he was mocked as โ€žHis Accidencyโ€œ. When President Harrison died after only a month, it was unclear whether the deputy truly became president: Tyler firmly claimed the office.
