11. James K. Polk

10 questions Β· Politics

James K. Polk, born in North Carolina in 1795, was the eleventh President of the United States (1845 to 1849) and one of the most consequential of the 19th century. The Democrat took office with clear goals and achieved them in a single term: then, as promised, did not run again. Polk was a firm advocate of expansion ("Manifest Destiny"). Through the Mexican-American War (1846 to 1848) the USA gained vast territories in the Southwest, including California. He also settled the Oregon question with Britain in the Northwest. Under him the United States reached the Pacific. This enormous expansion, however, sharpened the conflict over slavery. Polk died in 1849, shortly after his term ended. Good to know: James K. Polk is seen as one of the most single-minded presidents: he fulfilled all his campaign promises and then stepped down. In just one term Polk vastly enlarged the territory of the USA. Polk pledged to serve only one term: a promise he kept; exhausted, he died three months after leaving office.
