12. Zachary Taylor

10 questions ยท Politics

Zachary Taylor, born in Virginia in 1784, was the twelfth President of the United States (1849 to 1850). A highly decorated career soldier, he became a national hero above all through the Mexican (American War) his nickname was "Old Rough and Ready". Before his election Taylor had never held political office and had never even voted. As the Whig candidate he nonetheless won the presidency. In the gathering conflict over the spread of slavery into the new western territories he took (though himself a slaveholder) a surprisingly firm stance for preserving the Union. His term stayed short: Taylor fell suddenly ill and died in 1850 after only about 16 months in office. Good to know: Zachary Taylor was a war hero with no political experience; he had never voted before his own election. Taylor's term lasted only a little over a year before he died suddenly. Though himself a slaveholder, Taylor opposed the spread of slavery into the new territories. โ€žOld Rough and Readyโ€œ his soldiers called him, for his willingness to share their hardships.
