14. Franklin Pierce

10 questions · Politics

Franklin Pierce, born in New Hampshire in 1804, was the fourteenth President of the United States (1853 to 1857). The Democrat was seen as charming and popular, but his term is regarded as largely unsuccessful. His presidency saw the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which left the question of slavery to the new territories themselves. The law triggered fierce, at times bloody, clashes and drove the country further towards civil war. Pierce was not renominated by his own party. His life was overshadowed by private tragedies; he died in 1869. Good to know: Franklin Pierce was seen as charming but weak; his term is considered a failure. Pierce's term deepened the country's division over slavery. Pierce was marked by personal tragedy: shortly before his inauguration his last son died in a train crash. The Kansas-Nebraska Act Pierce backed ignited bloody violence over slavery („Bleeding Kansas“) and hastened the road to civil war. Historians rank Pierce among the least successful presidents: his own party did not renominate him.
