159. Urban II

9 questions · Religion & Belief

Urban II reigned at the end of the 11th century and triggered one of the most consequential events of the Middle Ages: the Crusades. At the Council of Clermont in 1095 he called on Christendom to wrest the Holy Land, and above all Jerusalem, from the Muslims. His stirring speech found an enormous echo. Knights and common people from all over Europe took the cross and set out on the First Crusade, which in 1099 indeed ended with the capture of Jerusalem. Thus began an era of about two centuries with further crusades, which shape the relationship between Christianity and Islam to this day. Urban also strengthened the power of the papacy. He died in 1099, shortly after the taking of Jerusalem. Good to know: With his appeal in 1095 Urban II launched the First Crusade: one of the most consequential speeches in history. At the Council of Clermont he called on Europe's knights to „liberate“ the Holy Land. The goal was to capture Jerusalem, which the crusaders indeed took in 1099. His appeal ignited nearly 200 years of crusades that still shape relations between Christianity and Islam.
