Pope Alexander IV was the 181st pope of the Roman Catholic Church; his pontificate falls into the High Middle Ages and lasted 1254 to 1261. The pope is the head of the Catholic Church and at the same time the Bishop of Rome. By tradition the line of popes reaches back unbroken to the apostle Peter, whom Jesus, according to Christian belief, made the “rock” of his Church: which makes the papacy one of the oldest continuously existing offices in world history. Over the centuries the popes shaped not only faith and liturgy but repeatedly intervened deeply in the politics of Europe: they crowned emperors, called councils and crusades, quarrelled with secular rulers over power and promoted art and science. Each individual pope thus stands for a piece of church and world history. Learn the order, the term of office and the era of this pope and place him in the long line of the successors of Peter. Good to know: Since the apostle Peter, the Catholic Church counts an unbroken line of popes. His pontificate: 1254 to 1261.
