Few years have changed the world like 2001. On September 11, hijacked passenger jets were flown into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon: nearly 3,000 people died, the towers collapsed, and with them a whole sense of security. Weeks later, the war against the Taliban began in Afghanistan, and in December China joined the World Trade Organization, opening a new chapter for the world economy. But 2001 was more than September 11: in January, a website quietly went online that wanted to collect the world's knowledge: Wikipedia. In October, Steve Jobs held up a small white box with a thousand songs in your pocket: the iPod. The space station Mir burned up in a controlled plunge over the Pacific, millionaire Dennis Tito bought himself a trip to space as the first tourist, and in The Hague, Milošević became the first former head of state to face a UN tribunal. In sport, Oliver Kahn saved the Champions League for Bayern Munich before Germany suffered a 5 to 1 humbling by England and in cinemas, two fantasy epics began with Harry Potter and "The Lord of the Rings". Twenty questions about a year of upheaval.
