20 questions · Current events

2004 was the year Europe grew closer together and the world held its breath at the year's end. On 1 May, ten countries joined the EU in one stroke: the largest enlargement in its history, reuniting a continent after decades of division. Only weeks earlier, the bombings of Madrid commuter trains had shaken Europe, killing 191 people. Summer belonged to sporting fairy tales: Otto Rehhagel's Greeks sensationally became European champions, Athens brought the Olympic Games home to their ancient birthplace, and Michael Schumacher clinched his seventh and final world title. Meanwhile, in a Harvard dorm room, a 19-year-old named Mark Zuckerberg switched on a website called "Thefacebook", Firefox challenged Internet Explorer, and "World of Warcraft" opened its gates. Germany argued over the Hartz IV welfare reform and its Monday demonstrations, elected Horst Köhler president and celebrated Werder Bremen's double. But on Boxing Day, everything went dark: an undersea earthquake in the Indian Ocean triggered a tsunami that took more than 230,000 lives: the most devastating natural disaster of our time. Twenty questions about a year of extremes.
