20 questions ยท Current events

For Germany, 2006 was above all one thing: the "summer fairy tale". For four weeks, the country hosted the World Cup and celebrated itself and its guests, black-red-gold flags flew from every balcony, and public viewing became a national pastime. On the pitch, the fairy tale ended in the semi-final against Italy, who claimed their fourth star in the Berlin final against France: unforgettable the headbutt with which Zinรฉdine Zidane bade farewell to the world stage, while Miroslav Klose finished as top scorer. History was written off the pitch too: astronomers demoted Pluto to a dwarf planet, three Americans founded a short-messaging service called Twitter, Google paid 1.65 billion dollars for the young platform YouTube, and Nintendo's Wii got living rooms moving. In world politics, North Korea detonated its first nuclear bomb, Montenegro became Europe's youngest state, Fidel Castro handed power to his brother, and in London the poisoned ex-agent Litvinenko died. And in Berlin Zoo, shortly before New Year's Eve, a polar bear cub was born that the whole world would soon know: Knut. Twenty questions about the year of the summer fairy tale.
