2008 in review

20 questions · Current events

15 September 2008 split the year into a before and an after: investment bank Lehman Brothers collapsed, and the mortgage crisis became the worst financial crisis since 1929. Banks teetered worldwide, and Angela Merkel and her finance minister stepped before the cameras with a historic sentence: "Your savings are safe." Just weeks later, America made history of its own: Barack Obama became the first Black president of the United States: "Yes we can". In Beijing, sport delivered the superhuman as Usain Bolt sprinted to world records in the 100 and 200 metres and Michael Phelps hauled eight golds out of the pool, while at the Euros in Vienna Spain broke German hearts. 2008 was also the year Kosovo declared independence, Russia and Georgia fought a five-day war, an earthquake in China and a cyclone in Myanmar claimed hundreds of thousands of victims and the year two quiet revolutions began: Apple opened the App Store, and an unknown figure calling himself Satoshi Nakamoto published a paper about a currency called Bitcoin. As the year closed, Hollywood mourned Heath Ledger, whose Joker became immortal. Twenty questions about the year of the great quake.
