20 questions · Current events

2009 opened with two unforgettable landings: on 15 January, Captain "Sully" Sullenberger set his Airbus down on the Hudson River after a bird strike: all 155 aboard survived the "Miracle on the Hudson". Five days later, Barack Obama took the oath of office before two million people in Washington; by autumn, barely into the job, he had already received the Nobel Peace Prize. The world economy, meanwhile, was deep in recession: car giant General Motors went bankrupt, Germany propped up sales with its "cash for clunkers" scrappage bonus, and swine flu was declared the century's first pandemic. In June the world caught its breath when Michael Jackson died at just 50 and in August Usain Bolt enchanted Berlin's Olympic Stadium with fabled world records of 9.58 and 19.19 seconds. Germany marvelled at VfL Wolfsburg's championship, voted in a conservative-liberal coalition, and Europe gave itself a new rulebook with the Lisbon Treaty. As the year closed, the Copenhagen climate summit collapsed under its own weight while "Avatar" smashed every box-office record and somewhere on the internet, Satoshi Nakamoto mined the first bitcoins. Twenty questions about a year of crash landings and perfect touchdowns.
