2010 began with one of the worst disasters of modern times: January's Haiti earthquake killed more than 200,000 people and reduced a country to rubble. In April, a volcano with an unpronounceable name paralysed Europe: the ash cloud of Eyjafjallajökull grounded almost all air traffic for days, while in the Gulf of Mexico oil gushed for months after the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded. Summer belonged to the vuvuzela drone of the first World Cup on African soil: Spain won their first title through Iniesta's goal in the final, Germany dazzled as a young third-placed side, and an octopus named Paul correctly predicted every German match. Germany celebrated twice over: Lena won the Eurovision Song Contest with "Satellite", and in autumn Sebastian Vettel became the youngest Formula 1 world champion in history. But the year had its dark days too: the Love Parade disaster in Duisburg, and the Smolensk plane crash that wiped out Poland's leadership. In October the world watched spellbound as 33 Chilean miners were rescued after 69 days underground, Apple unveiled the iPad, WikiLeaks published its cables and in December, in Tunisia, the Arab Spring began. Twenty questions about a year filled to the brim.
