20 questions · Current events

11 March 2011 changed the world (and Germany with it): a magnitude 9.1 undersea quake sent a tsunami onto Japan's coast, around 18,000 people died, and the Fukushima nuclear plant suffered a triple meltdown. Just months later, the Bundestag voted for Germany's definitive nuclear phase-out. The Arab Spring reached its peak: Ben Ali fled Tunisia, Mubarak fell in Egypt after 18 days of Tahrir Square protests, the Gaddafi era ended in Libya and in Pakistan, US special forces tracked down Osama bin Laden in May. In May, IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was arrested in New York, ending his hopes of the French presidency, while Norway suffered the darkest day of its post-war history with the Oslo and Utøya attacks. There were bright spots too: the fairy-tale wedding of William and Kate, the Women's World Cup on German soil, Dortmund's championship under Jürgen Klopp, the Space Shuttle's final flight and on 31 October the United Nations symbolically welcomed the seven billionth human. In October the tech world mourned Steve Jobs, the music world Amy Winehouse. Twenty questions about a year of tremors.
