2013 in review

20 questions · Current events

2013 began with a sensation from Rome: Benedict XVI became the first pope since the Middle Ages to resign, and with Jorge Bergoglio the conclave elected Francis: the first Latin American and first Jesuit on the throne of Peter. In June, a single man then shattered trust in the digital world: Edward Snowden exposed the NSA's global mass surveillance, including Merkel's tapped mobile phone. The sky itself sent a warning in February when a meteor exploded over Chelyabinsk, injuring around 1,500 people. Germany had a year of superlatives: the June floods on the Elbe and Danube surpassed 2002 levels in many places, May brought the first all-German Champions League final at Wembley (Robben settled it for treble-winning Bayern) and in the federal election Merkel narrowly missed an absolute majority while the FDP crashed out of parliament for the first time. The world said farewell to Nelson Mandela and Margaret Thatcher, welcomed Prince George and Dutch King Willem-Alexander, bought PS4s, Xbox Ones and GTA V in record numbers and Voyager 1 became the first human-made object to leave the heliosphere. Helene Fischer provided the soundtrack with "Atemlos". Twenty questions about a year of turning points.
