For German football fans, 2014 is THE year: first the national team dismantled hosts Brazil 7:1 in a surreal World Cup semi-final, then Mario Götze volleyed Germany past Argentina in the Maracanã final to claim a fourth star: the first title since 1990 and the first ever won by a European team on South American soil. World politics, however, delivered dark headlines: after Ukrainian president Yanukovych fell to the Maidan protests, Russia annexed Crimea, war began in eastern Ukraine, and in July flight MH17 was shot down over the conflict zone: months after MH370 of the same airline had vanished without trace. West Africa battled the worst Ebola epidemic in history, while half the internet poured ice water over its head for charity. Scotland voted on independence and stayed, Conchita Wurst won Eurovision, 17-year-old Malala the Nobel Peace Prize and the Rosetta probe set its lander Philae down on a comet, a first in the history of spaceflight. Germany adopted a statutory minimum wage, mourned Robin Williams and marvelled at Facebook's 19-billion-dollar deal for WhatsApp. Twenty questions about the year of the fourth star.
