2016 in review

20 questions · Current events

2016 was the year of political shocks: in June, Britain voted for Brexit (PM Cameron resigned the very next morning) and in November the US elected Donald Trump, a president almost no pollster had seen coming. In between, part of Turkey's military staged a failed coup against Erdoğan, a truck attacker ploughed into Bastille Day crowds in Nice, and shortly before Christmas terror struck Germany at Berlin's Breitscheidplatz Christmas market. Sport, by contrast, told fairy tales like never before: Leicester City won the English title at 5,000-1 odds, Iceland got all of Europe doing the "Huh!" thunderclap, Portugal took the Euro crown, and in Rio Usain Bolt completed his triple-triple while Michael Phelps collected gold number 23. Science celebrated the first direct detection of gravitational waves, software beat the world's best Go player for the first time, and half the planet chased Pokémon through the parks. The Panama Papers exposed the shell companies of the powerful, Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize in Literature, Colombia made peace with the FARC and the world mourned Bowie, Prince, Muhammad Ali and Fidel Castro. Twenty questions about the year of surprises.
