20 questions · Current events

In July 2018 the world held its breath for two weeks as twelve boys and their football coach were trapped in a flooded cave in Thailand: their rescue by divers from around the globe became the miracle of the year. For Germany, sport turned bitter instead: the defending champions crashed out of a World Cup group stage for the first time, while France claimed a second star in Russia. Politically, the year began with the longest government formation in German history and ended with a watershed: Angela Merkel gave up the CDU leadership. The world watched the nerve-agent attack on ex-spy Skripal in Salisbury, the murder of journalist Khashoggi in a Saudi consulate, and the historic Trump-Kim handshake in Singapore. Europe sweltered through a once-in-a-century summer, Genoa's Morandi bridge collapsed, and GDPR flooded every inbox with privacy mails. SpaceX shot a Tesla roadster towards Mars on the Falcon Heavy, Stephen Hawking died, Harry married Meghan, Canada legalised cannabis and in August a 15-year-old Swede sat down outside parliament with a sign: Greta Thunberg's school strike became a global movement. Twenty questions about a year stretched between cave and cosmos.
