And it ended in the shadow of a new war: on 7 October, Hamas attacked Israel, killing about 1,200 people and abducting hundreds of hostages; the Gaza war began. In between, Russia lived through a weekend of madness as Wagner boss Prigozhin marched his mercenaries towards Moscow, turned around and died in a plane crash two months later. Germany took a historic step when its last three nuclear plants went offline on 15 April, and in October South Africa's Springboks beat New Zealand by a single point in Paris to win a record fourth Rugby World Cup. The world, meanwhile, stumbled through the first full AI year with GPT-4, while Charles III was crowned and the submersible "Titan" imploded en route to the Titanic wreck. Summer belonged to "Barbenheimer" (the surreal double premiere of Barbie and Oppenheimer) Taylor Swift's Eras Tour shattered every record, India became the first nation to land near the Moon's south pole, and Spain's footballers won the World Cup before a boundary-crossing federation boss overshadowed the triumph. The world said goodbye to Tina Turner and Silvio Berlusconi, Messi moved to Miami and Nagorno-Karabakh ceased to exist. Twenty questions about a restless year.
