2025 began with Donald Trump's second inauguration and by April his "Liberation Day" tariff package had turned world trade upside down. Germany voted early in February: Friedrich Merz became chancellor, though only in a second round of voting (a first in the Federal Republic's history) and loosened the constitutional debt brake with a historic package for defence and infrastructure. In Rome an era ended: Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, and the conclave elected Leo XIV, the first American on the throne of Peter. In June the world held its breath during the "Twelve-Day War" between Israel, the US and Iran, before Trump's Gaza plan in October delivered a ceasefire and the release of the last living hostages; the Nobel Peace Prize went to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado. Syria restarted under transitional president al-Sharaa, Trump and Putin met in Alaska, and Trump and Musk dismantled their bromance in public. In between: the first fully successful private Moon landing, Chelsea's title at the new Club World Cup, JJ's Eurovision win for Austria, the brazen daylight theft of crown jewels from the Louvre and a Netflix animated film about demon-hunting K-pop singers that broke every record.
