Leo X of the powerful Florentine House of Medici was pope when the Reformation broke out in Germany and thus became, against his will, a key figure in the split of the church. He reigned in the early 16th century. Leo was a splendour-loving Renaissance prince and generous patron of art and culture. To finance the enormous new building of St. Peter's Basilica, he had the sale of indulgences pushed forward: precisely the abuse against which Martin Luther rose up in 1517 with his 95 Theses. Leo at first underestimated the movement and finally placed Luther under the church's ban. But the Reformation could no longer be stopped. Leo X died in 1521, as the split of the Western church deepened unstoppably. Good to know: As the son of Lorenzo de' Medici, Leo X embodied the splendour-loving Renaissance pope from a banking dynasty. The Reformation began during his reign in 1517: Leo long dismissed Luther as a mere „quarrelsome monk“. To fund St Peter's Basilica, Leo pushed the sale of indulgences: the very abuse Luther protested against.
