22./24. Grover Cleveland

10 questions Β· Politics

Grover Cleveland, born in New Jersey in 1837, was the twenty-second and the twenty-fourth President of the United States. Until very recently he was the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms: 1885 to 1889 and, after an election defeat and a comeback, again 1893 to 1897. The Democrat was seen as independent and thrifty and valued honesty in office. His second term saw a severe economic crisis. Because he served two separate terms, he is counted twice in the official numbering: which is why there are 47 presidencies but fewer distinct people. Cleveland died in 1908. Good to know: Grover Cleveland is the only president with two non-consecutive terms until Trump: which is why he is counted twice. Cleveland lost re-election in 1888 despite winning the popular vote, but won again four years later: a comeback only Donald Trump repeated, in 2024. Benjamin Harrison governed between Cleveland's two terms: which is why Cleveland is the 22nd AND the 24th president. Cleveland was the first Democrat elected to the White House after the Civil War: following 24 years of Republican dominance.
