23. Benjamin Harrison

10 questions Β· Politics

Benjamin Harrison, born in Ohio in 1833, was the twenty-third President of the United States (1889 to 1893). He governed exactly between Grover Cleveland's two terms, first defeating him and then losing to him again. Harrison came from a genuine presidential dynasty: he was the grandson of William Henry Harrison, the ninth president. The Republican promoted high protective tariffs and the expansion of the navy; his term saw the admission of several new western states. He died in 1901. Good to know: Benjamin Harrison won the 1888 election despite fewer popular votes than his rival: thanks to a majority in the Electoral College. During Harrison's term six new states were admitted to the Union: a record. His grandfather William Henry Harrison was also president: the only grandfather-grandson pair in the White House. Harrison was the first to have the White House wired for electricity: but fearing shocks the family barely touched the light switches. Harrison slotted exactly between Grover Cleveland's two terms: which is why Cleveland is both the 22nd and 24th president.
