26. Theodore Roosevelt

10 questions · Politics

Theodore Roosevelt, born in New York in 1858, was the twenty-sixth President of the United States (1901 to 1909). When he came to office after McKinley's assassination, he was, at 42, the youngest president in history. The energetic Republican moved decisively against over-mighty corporations ("trust-buster"), strengthened consumer protection and became the great champion of conservation: under him many national parks and reserves were created. In foreign policy he pushed the building of the Panama Canal and mediated in the Russo-Japanese War, for which he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906. His head is carved on Mount Rushmore; the teddy bear is named after him. He died in 1919. Good to know: Theodore Roosevelt was a force of nature: cowboy, war hero, naturalist and reformer in one. At 42, „Teddy“ Roosevelt became the youngest US president ever, after McKinley's assassination. As a „trust-buster“ Roosevelt broke up powerful monopolies and strengthened the state against big corporations.
