266. Francis

10 questions · Religion & Belief

Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina in 1936, was pope from 2013 to 2025 and in several respects a pope of firsts. He was the first pope from Latin America, the first from the southern hemisphere and the first Jesuit on the chair of Peter. He chose his name after Francis of Assisi, the saint of poverty and creation: a programme in itself. Francis stood for humility, gave up some pomp and put the poor, refugees and the protection of the environment at the centre. His environmental encyclical drew worldwide attention. At the same time he sought a renewal of the church. Francis died in 2025. His successor was Leo XIV. Good to know: As Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina, he was the first pope from Latin America and the first from the „New World“.
