267. Leo XIV

8 questions · Religion & Belief

Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago in 1955, has been pope since May 2025 and the first US-born pope in history. He was elected in a short conclave after the death of Francis. Prevost joined the Order of Saint Augustine and spent many years as a missionary and bishop in Peru, whose citizenship he also holds. This long experience outside the USA and in a country of the Global South was seen by some as important, because a purely "American" pope had long been thought unlikely given the political weight of the USA. With the choice of his name, Leo XIV connects to earlier popes of that name. As a guiding idea he named a "missionary church that builds bridges and dialogue". Good to know: As Robert Prevost from Chicago, in 2025 he became the first pope from the USA. He was elected in May 2025: succeeding the late Francis. He belongs to the Augustinian order, which he had previously led worldwide. For many years he served as a missionary and bishop in Peru and holds Peruvian citizenship as well.
