27. William Howard Taft

10 questions ยท Politics

William Howard Taft, born in Ohio in 1857, was the twenty-seventh President of the United States (1909 to 1913) and the only person to hold the highest office in both the executive and the judiciary. Taft was the successor backed by Theodore Roosevelt, but fell out with him, which in 1912 led to a split in the Republicans and to Taft's election defeat. His real dream role came later: in 1921 he was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court: a position that fulfilled him far more than the presidency. Taft was also the heaviest president in history. He died in 1930. Good to know: William Howard Taft was Theodore Roosevelt's chosen successor: but the two soon fell out. Taft pursued the breaking-up of monopolies even more vigorously than his predecessor Roosevelt. Taft is the only person to have been both US president and later Chief Justice of the USA: he actually preferred the judicial post. At around 150 kg Taft was the heaviest US president: the legend of the bathtub he got stuck in persists to this day.
