10 questions · Politics

Warren G. Harding, born in Ohio in 1865, was the twenty-ninth President of the United States (1921 to 1923). The Republican won the election on a promise of a "return to normalcy" after the upheavals of the World War. Harding was personally popular, but his administration was rocked by serious corruption affairs; the best known is the Teapot Dome scandal over the awarding of state oil reserves. These scandals largely came to light only after his death, however. In 1923 Harding died unexpectedly in office. His Vice President Calvin Coolidge took over. Good to know: Warren G. Harding won the 1920 election promising a „return to normalcy“ after the world war. Harding's term ended abruptly with his sudden death after just over two years. „Return to normalcy“ (the longing for calm after war and pandemic) struck a chord with voters. The „Teapot Dome scandal“ over bribed cabinet members is considered one of the biggest corruption scandals before Watergate. Harding died suddenly on a trip in 1923: before the full extent of his administration's scandals came to light.
