Calvin Coolidge, born in Vermont in 1872, was the thirtieth President of the United States (1923 to 1929). As Vice President he succeeded to office after the sudden death of Warren Harding and was then confirmed in office. The Republican was known for his extreme reticence; his nickname was "Silent Cal". He favoured low taxes, little state intervention and a thrifty budget. His term fell in the economic heyday of the "Roaring Twenties". Coolidge chose not to run again. A few months after he left, the stock market crash of 1929 began the Great Depression. He died in 1933. Good to know: Calvin Coolidge rose as vice president after President Harding died suddenly.
