31. Herbert Hoover

10 questions ยท Politics

Herbert Hoover, born in Iowa in 1874, was the thirty-first President of the United States (1929 to 1933). Before his election the Republican had become known worldwide as a successful engineer and organiser of major humanitarian relief efforts. His presidency was, however, almost entirely overshadowed by a catastrophe: only months after he took office, the stock market crash of 1929 triggered the Great Depression. Millions lost their jobs and savings. Hoover's countermeasures were seen as inadequate, and in the 1932 election he lost decisively to Franklin D. Roosevelt. Hoover remained publicly active for decades afterwards and died in 1964. Good to know: Herbert Hoover had the misfortune of becoming president just before the onset of the Great Depression. Just months after Hoover took office, the stock market crashed in 1929 and plunged the world into depression. Impoverished people mockingly called their shanty towns โ€žHoovervillesโ€œ: after the president they blamed. Before politics Hoover was a globe-trotting mining engineer and millionaire and organised huge relief efforts for starving Europeans in the First World War.
