38. Gerald Ford

10 questions Β· Politics

Gerald Ford, born in Nebraska in 1913, was the thirty-eighth President of the United States (1974 to 1977) and came to office by a path unique in history. He is the only president elected neither as president nor as vice president. Ford was a congressman when, in 1973, he was appointed vice president after the resignation of Vice President Spiro Agnew. When Richard Nixon resigned in 1974 amid the Watergate affair, Ford succeeded to the presidency. Shortly afterwards he pardoned Nixon: a highly controversial decision that cost him much support. Ford lost the 1976 election and died in 2006. Good to know: Gerald Ford is the only person to become president without ever being elected president or vice president. Ford was first appointed vice president and then moved up to the top office, without ever appearing on an election ticket. When Nixon resigned over the Watergate affair in 1974, his deputy Ford became president. Ford's pardon of Nixon (even before charges were filed) was highly controversial and probably cost him re-election.
