James Madison, born in Virginia in 1751, is regarded as the "Father of the Constitution" and was the fourth President of the United States (1809 to 1817). He played a decisive part in drafting the American Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Together with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay he wrote the famous Federalist Papers, which argued for adoption of the Constitution. Politically Madison later belonged to the Democratic-Republicans. His term saw the War of 1812 against Britain, in which British troops even burned Washington; the White House had to be rebuilt afterwards. Madison was the smallest and lightest president in history. He died in 1836. Good to know: James Madison was small in stature but one of the greatest thinkers among the Founding Fathers.
