40. Ronald Reagan

10 questions · Politics

Ronald Reagan, born in Illinois in 1911, was the fortieth President of the United States (1981 to 1989). Before entering politics he was a Hollywood actor and then governor of California. The Republican pursued marked tax cuts and less state regulation: a policy that became known as "Reaganomics". In foreign policy he first confronted the Soviet Union firmly but later sought understanding with its reformer Gorbachev. His term saw the approaching end of the Cold War; famous is his call in Berlin to tear down the wall. In 1981 Reagan survived an assassination attempt. At his inauguration he was the oldest president up to that time. He died in 2004. Good to know: Ronald Reagan shaped the 1980s with his optimism and conservative turn. Before politics Reagan was a Hollywood actor and the actors' union leader: an unusual path to the White House. „Reaganomics“ relied on tax cuts and small government: still influential in US economic policy today. Reagan's hard line towards the Soviet Union and his appeal „Tear down this wall!“ helped bring about the end of the Cold War.
