43. George W. Bush

9 questions ยท Politics

George W. Bush, born in 1946, was the forty-third President of the United States (2001 to 2009). The Republican was the son of the 41st president, George H. W. Bush, and had previously been governor of Texas. His presidency was defined by the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, in which almost 3,000 people died. In response Bush declared the "War on Terror" and sent forces into Afghanistan and later Iraq. These wars shaped world politics for years and remained highly controversial. Towards the end of his term the financial crisis of 2008 also shook the economy. Bush largely withdrew from public life afterwards. Good to know: George W. Bush won the extremely close 2000 election only after a weeks-long dispute over the votes in Florida. His father George H. W. Bush was the 41st president: the Bushes and the Adamses are the only father-and-son pairs in office. In response Bush launched wars in Afghanistan (2001) and Iraq (2003): the latter remains controversial to this day. Just before Bush left office the global financial crisis plunged the world into the worst recession since the 1930s.
