10 questions · Politics

James Monroe, born in Virginia in 1758, was the fifth President of the United States (1817 to 1825) and the last from the generation of Founding Fathers. His time is known as the "Era of Good Feelings": a phase of relative domestic unity after the end of party strife. Best known is the Monroe Doctrine of 1823, named after him. In it he declared that the USA would not tolerate any further European interference or colonisation in the Americas. This principle shaped American foreign policy for many decades. Monroe, like his predecessors, belonged to the Democratic-Republicans. He died in 1831: like Adams and Jefferson, on a 4 July. Good to know: James Monroe was the last president from the generation of Founding Fathers. Monroe governed in a rare period of domestic harmony. The Monroe Doctrine of 1823 warned European powers to stay out of the Americas: a pillar of US foreign policy to this day.
