John Quincy Adams, born in Massachusetts in 1767, was the sixth President of the United States (1825 to 1829) and the son of the second president, John Adams. For the first time, father and son had both been president. Before his presidency he was an outstanding diplomat and Secretary of State; the Monroe Doctrine was largely his work. His own election in 1824 was contested: as no candidate reached a majority of electors, the House of Representatives decided in his favour. As president he could achieve little and lost re-election. Remarkable is his second career: after the presidency Adams sat in the House of Representatives for almost two decades and fought there resolutely against slavery. He died in 1848 in the Capitol. Good to know: John Quincy Adams was the son of the second president; the first time a president's son reached the office himself. Adams's presidency was seen as largely unsuccessful: blocked by a hostile Congress. His father John Adams was the 2nd president: father and son in the top office, matched later only by the Bushes.
