Gregory the Great (Gregory I) reigned around the year 600 and is one of the most influential popes of the early Middle Ages. Born into a noble Roman family, he gave up a life as a high official to become a monk: yet as pope he became an energetic organiser. Gregory reformed the administration, liturgy and finances of the church and, in troubled times, also saw to the worldly provision of Rome. Famous is the church music named after him: "Gregorian chant" bears his name. He also sent out missionaries who won Anglo-Saxon England for Christianity. Good to know: Only three popes bear the title „the Great“: Gregory I is one of them. Gregorian chant is named after him, though his role in its origins is disputed.
