William Henry Harrison, born in Virginia in 1773, was the ninth President of the United States and had by far the shortest term in history. He had become known as a soldier and fighter against Native Americans (Battle of Tippecanoe) and took office in 1841 for the Whig Party. At his inauguration he gave the longest inaugural address of all time in cold weather, without coat or hat. Shortly afterwards he fell seriously ill and died after only 31 days in office. He was thus the first US president to die in office. His death raised an important constitutional question: who succeeds? His Vice President John Tyler set the decisive precedent. Good to know: William Henry Harrison held the presidency for a shorter time than anyone else in US history. Harrison was in office for just 31 days: by far the shortest presidency ever. Harrison was the first US president to die in office: probably of pneumonia. His campaign with the slogan โTippecanoe and Tyler tooโ is seen as one of the first modern, image-driven campaigns in US history.
