Aaru (Field of Reeds)

12 questions · Mythology

Aaru, the “Field of Reeds”, is in ancient Egyptian belief the paradise of the blessed: an idealised image of Egypt with fertile fields, where the deceased, having passed the judgement of the dead, leads a happy, eternal life. Whoever had lived justly in life could go on sowing, harvesting and living in peace here. Aaru shows how strongly the Egyptians imagined the afterlife as a continuation of earthly life. So the blessed would not have to work themselves, small ushabti figures were placed in the grave. Aaru lay in the east, where the sun rises: a sea of reeds full of channels through which ferrymen carried the blessed and even the ferryman asked test questions. Life there resembled Egypt on the Nile, only more perfect: emmer and barley grew fabulously tall, beer and bread remained the food of eternity. So that the blessed need not toil themselves, ushabti were placed in their graves: servant figurines that took over the field work on command; some tombs held hundreds. Admission was strictly regulated: only a passed judgement of the dead opened the gate, and before the 42 assessors (one for each district of Egypt) the deceased spoke the “negative confession”: I have not killed, not stolen, not lied … Spell 110 of the Book of the Dead shows the reward in pictures: the blessed sowing, ploughing and reaping in lush fields: everyday life as paradise.
