Abbreviations everyone uses
19 questions · General knowledge
We say them a hundred times a day without ever unpacking them. PDF, LED, ATM, NATO, SOS: abbreviations become so familiar that the long form disappears entirely, even though it usually explains the thing itself. PDF stands for Portable Document Format, and that is the whole point of it: a document that looks the same on every machine. LASER is not a word at all but a sentence (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) and it describes exactly how the device works. SCUBA is the same trick underwater: Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus, a name that tells a diver everything that matters. Some are older than they look: RSVP is French and has been on invitations since the eighteenth century, RADAR was coined by the US Navy in 1940, and SOS was chosen in 1906 for one reason only: three dots, three dashes, three dots is unmistakable in bad reception. It never stood for Save Our Souls; that was read into it afterwards. This pack collects nineteen abbreviations you already use and gives each one its long form back. Most of them stop being jargon the moment you can say what they mean.
