Akira Kurosawa

10 questions · Film & Cinema

Akira Kurosawa, born in Tokyo in 1910, was the most famous Japanese director and one of the most influential filmmakers in the world. He built a bridge between the cinema of Japan and that of the West. World-famous became his powerful samurai epics such as "Seven Samurai" and "Rashomon". Kurosawa's dynamic visual language and storytelling talent thrilled Hollywood too: his films were remade several times, and directors like George Lucas drew direct inspiration from him for "Star Wars". "Rashomon", which tells the same deed from several contradictory perspectives, even coined a term of its own. Kurosawa received an honorary Oscar for his life's work. He died in 1998. Good to know: Kurosawa opened Japanese cinema to Western audiences: his „Rashomon“ surprisingly won the Golden Lion in Venice in 1951. „Seven Samurai“ was remade in Hollywood as the Western „The Magnificent Seven“. George Lucas drew directly on Kurosawa's „The Hidden Fortress“ for „Star Wars“: right down to the two droids.
