Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, born around 780, worked at the "House of Wisdom" in Baghdad, the intellectual heart of the Islamic Golden Age. There the knowledge of the Greeks, Persians and Indians was collected, translated and developed further and al-Khwarizmi became one of the most influential mathematicians in history, though most people today do not know his name. In his famous textbook he set out systematic methods for solving equations: by cleverly rearranging and balancing them. The Arabic term for this, "al-jabr", survives to this day in our word algebra. And from the Latinized form of his name, "Algoritmi", came a word that shapes the modern world like few others: algorithm. Equally momentous: al-Khwarizmi spread the Indian place-value and decimal system, with the digit zero, throughout the Arab-Islamic world, from which it later reached Europe and replaced the clumsy Roman numerals. Without these "Arabic numerals", modern calculation would be unthinkable. So at the origin of algebra, algorithms and our number system stands a scholar from ninth-century Baghdad: a builder of bridges between cultures and eras.
