Albert Einstein

11 questions · Science

Albert Einstein, born in Ulm in 1879, was seen as a dreamy and rebellious pupil and, after his studies, could not find a university post. He ended up as a technical examiner at the Bern patent office and there, alongside the day job, he wrote four papers in his 1905 "miracle year" that overturned physics: on special relativity, the photoelectric effect, Brownian motion, and the world's most famous formula, E = mc². Ten years later came his masterpiece, general relativity. Its central idea is astonishing: gravity is not a force but the curvature of space and time by mass. Large masses dent spacetime, and planets roll, as it were, into these hollows. When a solar eclipse in 1919 confirmed the predicted bending of starlight, Einstein became a scientific superstar overnight. His 1921 Nobel Prize, however, was awarded not for relativity but for the photoelectric effect; a building block of quantum physics, which he himself later resisted ("God does not play dice"). In 1933 Einstein, a Jew, turned his back on Nazi Germany and emigrated to the USA, to the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. A committed pacifist, he warned President Roosevelt in a letter of a German atomic bomb and later wrestled hard with that responsibility. In 1952 he even declined the office of President of Israel. Until his death in 1955 he remained the very symbol of genius, with wild hair and alert eyes.

All questions with answers

When and where was Albert Einstein born?

Show answer

1879 (Ulm)

He grew up in Munich.

💡 Did you know? Einstein was born in Ulm in 1879: far from a prodigy as a child, he was late to start speaking.

What is Einstein's most famous formula?

Show answer

E = mc²

Mass and energy are interchangeable.

💡 Did you know? E = mc² states that mass and energy are interchangeable: the basis of nuclear power and the atomic bomb.

Which theory did Einstein propose in 1905?

Show answer

special relativity

Space and time are relative to the observer.

💡 Did you know? Special relativity showed that time runs slower for fast-moving objects: measurable with today's atomic clocks.

Which theory followed in 1915?

Show answer

general relativity

It describes gravity as the curvature of spacetime.

💡 Did you know? General relativity interprets gravity as the curvature of space and time: first confirmed by a 1919 solar eclipse.

What is gravity according to Einstein?

Show answer

curvature of spacetime

Not a force but geometry.

💡 Did you know? Massive bodies like the Sun curve space: planets, in effect, fall into this „dent“.

What did Einstein win the 1921 Nobel Prize for?

Show answer

photoelectric effect

Not for relativity.

💡 Did you know? Einstein received the Nobel not for relativity but for the photoelectric effect.

Where did Einstein work in 1905?

Show answer

patent office (Bern)

He wrote his breakthroughs alongside his day job.

💡 Did you know? Einstein wrote his revolutionary 1905 papers on the side as a junior clerk at the Bern patent office.

Where did Einstein emigrate to in 1933?

Show answer

USA (Princeton)

He fled from the Nazis.

💡 Did you know? As a Jew, Einstein fled the Nazis to the USA in 1933: the German government put a bounty on his head.

What did Einstein warn President Roosevelt about?

Show answer

German atomic bomb

The pacifist later wrestled with that responsibility.

💡 Did you know? Einstein warned Roosevelt of a German atomic bomb: later he deeply regretted that letter.

Which office did Einstein decline in 1952?

Show answer

President of Israel

He felt unsuited to politics.

💡 Did you know? In 1952 Einstein was offered the presidency of Israel: he politely declined.

Which scientist is shown here?

Show answer

Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein revolutionised physics with his theories of relativity and became the very image of genius.

💡 Did you know? After his death his brain was secretly removed and studied for decades.
