Alexander the Great

10 questions ยท History

Alexander the Great, born in Macedonia in 356 BC, is regarded as one of the greatest military commanders in history. As a boy he was taught by the philosopher Aristotle; at just twenty he came to the throne. In only a decade Alexander conquered the vast Persian Empire and pushed as far as India. He thus created one of the largest empires of antiquity, stretching from Greece to the edge of present-day Pakistan. He was defeated in not a single major battle. His campaigns also spread Greek culture across much of the East. Alexander died in 323 BC at just 32 years old in Babylon. After his death his empire quickly fell apart. Good to know: Alexander took the throne of Macedon in northern Greece at just 20. His private tutor was none other than the philosopher Aristotle. Alexander shattered the vast Persian Empire and extended his rule as far as India. Alexander was never defeated in a single major battle: an unparalleled record. Alexander died in Babylon at just 32: the cause (fever? poison?) is still debated.
