Alexander von Humboldt

10 questions · History

Alexander von Humboldt, born in Berlin in 1769, was a naturalist, explorer and one of the last universal scholars. From 1799 to 1804 he undertook a legendary research journey through South and Central America that revolutionised science. Humboldt measured, collected and observed tirelessly: volcanoes, plants, animals, the night sky, the Earth's magnetism. Above all he grasped nature as one great, connected whole, in which climate, plant life and living conditions are interwoven: a founding idea of modern ecology and geography. His work influenced generations of researchers, including Charles Darwin. Scarcely anyone has more places named after him: countless plants, animals, mountains and even an ocean current bear his name. He died in 1859. Good to know: Humboldt came from a wealthy Prussian family and funded his first great expedition from his own inheritance. For five years Humboldt crossed South America: his measurements later filled dozens of volumes. Humboldt is seen as a founder of modern geography: the first to conceive of nature as an interconnected system.
