Alfred Hitchcock

10 questions · Film & Cinema

Alfred Hitchcock, born in London in 1899, was probably the most famous director in film history and still bears the nickname "Master of Suspense". Scarcely anyone understood so well how to put audiences into fear and thrill. In classics such as "Psycho", "The Birds", "Vertigo" and "North by Northwest", Hitchcock perfected the art of building suspense slowly and letting the audience know more than the characters. His films are full of iconic scenes, such as the shower murder in "Psycho". A charming trademark: in almost every one of his films Hitchcock had a brief, hidden cameo appearance. He became a world-famous cult figure and died in 1980. Good to know: Hitchcock began his career in British silent film before moving to Hollywood in the 1940s. For Hitchcock „suspense“ is not surprise but the tension of the viewer who knows more than the characters: like the ticking bomb under the table. For the famous shower scene in „Psycho“, Hitchcock needed a week of filming and around 70 camera setups, for less than a minute of screen time.
