Amelia Earhart
10 questions Β· Society & Everyday
Amelia Earhart is born in the United States in 1897, an adventurous child who refuses to fit the narrow role assigned to girls of her time. In her early twenties she sits in an aeroplane for the first time and is instantly enchanted. She works hard to afford flying lessons, buys her own plane and soon sets her first altitude records. In an era when flying is almost exclusively the preserve of men, she is determined to prove that women are just as brave and capable.
In 1932 she achieves the feat that makes her world-famous: she becomes the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. The flight is dangerous (storm, ice and technical problems accompany her) but she masters it. Overnight she becomes a celebrated heroine and a symbol that women can break into every field.
Earhart uses her fame to encourage other women. She writes books, gives lectures and campaigns for the rights of women pilots. She is always looking for the next challenge, the next record.
In 1937 she sets out on her most ambitious project: a flight around the world along the equator. But on one of the final legs, over the vast Pacific, her plane vanishes without a trace. Despite an enormous search, Amelia Earhart and her navigator are never found. Her disappearance remains one of the great mysteries of aviation to this day and Amelia Earhart one of the most famous pioneers of flight.
