Amenhotep III

9 questions · History

Amenhotep III ruled from about 1388 to 1351 BC: at a time when Egypt no longer needed to conquer anything. His predecessor Thutmose III had brought the empire to its greatest extent; Amenhotep could spend the wealth. He had the Luxor Temple built, a mortuary temple of unprecedented size and several hundred statues of the lion-headed goddess Sekhmet. Of his mortuary temple only the two Colossi of Memnon remain, which became famous in Roman times as „singing“ statues. His son was to overturn everything: Akhenaten. Good to know: He hardly had to wage war and could build like no other. Gold from Nubia made Egypt the richest power of its day. The temple itself was Egypt's largest: an earthquake destroyed it. The Greeks mistakenly took the statues for the legendary hero Memnon. Probably dew in cracks of the stone let air escape. A Roman repair silenced the sound, for good. Ramesses II later enlarged it considerably. Once a year the divine images were carried there from Karnak in procession.
