American football: basics

8 questions · Sports

American football (basics): Each team has eleven players on the field. After a touchdown you can add the 'extra point' (1) by kick or the 'two-point conversion' (2). If a team fails to make 10 yards in four 'downs', possession goes to the opponent. A single attempt is called a down. A field goal scores three points. The quarterback runs the offence and throws the passes: the most important position on the team. A stop in your own end zone is a safety (2 points). A game is officially 60 minutes (four times 15). Good to know: Offence and defence are completely separate squads. A „touchdown“ only needs the ball to reach the end zone: unlike rugby it need not be grounded there. Fail to make the ten yards and the ball goes over: which is why teams often punt on fourth down. On 4th down teams usually punt or try a field goal. A field goal from over 60 yards is extremely rare. The quarterback is the most important and highest-paid player: stars earn tens of millions a year. A safety gives the defence 2 points: the rarest score.
