American football: positions & terms
8 questions · Sports
American football (positions & terms): The deep pass-catcher is the wide receiver. The ball-carrier on running plays is the running back. A caught pass is a 'completion'; a pass caught by the opponent is an 'interception'. Tackling the QB behind the line is a sack.
A pass caught by the defence is an interception. The lost ball is a fumble. The scoring area is the end zone. At the line of scrimmage offence and defence face off before every play.
Good to know: Receivers are among the fastest players on the field. Top running backs often carry the ball 20+ times a game. A good quarterback can throw the ball over 50 metres; the „Hail Mary“ is the desperate last-second heave. A sack throws the offence back several yards. An interception can flip a game in an instant. A fumble is live: either team may recover it. If the ball reaches the end zone in possession, it's a touchdown. At the line of scrimmage both teams face off: no attacker may cross it before the snap. Wide receivers are usually the fastest players on the team, covering several kilometres at a sprint per game.
